Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany

In our Gospel reading from Luke 4, Jesus speaks with authority over demonic forces. They must obey because He is the Son of God. His words accomplish what they set out to do. In the woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder, Christ's resurrection has been depicted as a victory over a skeleton of death and the devil as a beast. Death has been defeated! Hell has been conquered! In Christ Jesus, we have the One who has overcome all forces of evil for us. In His power we find security and life of the One with the authority to forgive us and give us life eternal in Him.
